The staff at Hawthorn Dental Associates volunteered time last week at Feed My Starving Children. The organization provides targeted, nutritious food assistance to nearly 70 countries in the developing world through missionary partnerships at orphanages, schools, clinics, refugee camps and malnourishment centers. We filled bags, which contained four main ingredients: rice, textured soy protein, dried vegetable and seasoned vitamins and minerals. There were various steps to the process, from labeling bags, to filling the bags, sealing the bags, to loading the bags into boxes to ship. It was a rewarding feeling to volunteer for such a good cause and it truly felt like we were making a difference!

Congratulations Sylvi on celebrating your 20th anniversary with HDA! Drs. Mora, staff, and family members helped Sylvi celebrate aboard the "Rockin The Chain" party tour on the Chain O'Lakes. As the sun set, they all enjoyed food, beverages and a little bit of dancing. Sylvi received a gift certificate to Louis Vuitton from the doctors and staff. Wishing her many more years of success with us!

Meet HDA's Newest Staff
From left to right:

Christin - Is a dental hygienist. She is fairly new to HDA and has been delighted with both the office and the friendly and welcoming staff. As an office we share a view that patient education is a number one priority. This gives each patient the opportunity to be involved in their care and the knowledge to prevent further incident. I hope to remain a member of this team for many years to come and look forward to meeting each of our patients and making their dental visits as comfortable and enjoyable as possible. Christin will be getting married this fall to her wonderful fiancé Rudy and they hope to start a family together in the future. When she is not cleaning teeth, she enjoys playing volleyball, singing, and making improvements to our new home.

Gabby – Is a dental assistant for a couple of years now. Gabby is a people person and loves to help the patients get comfortable in our office. Gabby is excited to expand her dental knowledge with HDA and build great relationships with our patients.

Ann – Welcome back Ann! She has been with HDA since 1995, working as a dental/ortho assistant. Ann has been working in many area dental offices since graduating from the College of Lake County Dental Hygiene School in 2007and now; she is back with HDA again! Ann is thrilled to be working with her HDA family and shares a passion in serving our patient's oral needs. Ann enjoys travel and scrapbooking in her spare time.

HDA had the pleasure of attending the health fair at Spring Meadows Independent Living Community. Seniors are just one of the groups in our community that we truly enjoy serving. We enjoyed meeting and speaking with each of the Spring Meadow residences.

Our community outreach program services a number of organizations throughout Lake County. For more information on how you can have HDA do a presentation for your group, contact us at 847-367-7222.

Make sure your children have a bright smile before school starts. Dental exams are very important for healthy teeth and gums. It's an easy way to prevent dental problems and give your children a perfect start to the school year. The state of Illinois now requires that all students in kindergarten, 2nd, and 6th grade have a dental exam completed by a licensed dentist. We encourage regular visits to monitor your child's dental development and to educate you and your child about preventative care. Give HDA a call today so you can start the school year off right. It's one of the best ways to keep your child healthy and happy!

Monique's daughter, Bianca, graduated from Illinois Wesleyan University on May 2nd.
Bianca received a Bachelor of Arts degree in Business Administration with a minor in Spanish.
Bianca was awarded with the Magna Cum Laude honor.
Congratulations Bianca! HDA is very proud of you.

Judee's daughter Katie, an UIC dental student, embarked on an adventure to Guatemala with the organization Hearts in Motion. This organization provides medical and dental care for the people of Central America. During her trip, Katie visited a new dental clinic under construction, administered fluoride varnish, and extracted teeth with the guidance of an oral surgeon. On her first day, Katie and two other dental students saw 60 patients and extracted over 150 teeth. Katie received several hugs and gratitude with every tooth she pulled! She traveled all around Zacapa and beyond to help as many people as she could during her time there. Aside from gaining a lot of oral surgery experience, she met incredible people and heard many amazing life stories on her adventure. Katie's trip allowed her to share her expertise to those who were in need.

HDA is very proud of Katie!

February is
National Children's Dental Health Month

Good oral hygiene and regular dental examinations are essential to your child's oral health. Developing good habits at an early age and scheduling regular dental visits helps children get a good start on a lifetime of healthy teeth and gums. Our hygienists, Judee and Lisa, have been busy visiting local pre-schools, daycares, and schools to educate children on the importance of good oral hygiene. To print some fun activities for your child to do during this month, visit our Goddesses of Gums tab.

A Great Dentist Goes to Washington-Government Relations Conference

Drs. Michael and Cheryl Mora along with approximately 60 other dentist volunteers from the Academy of General Dentistry traveled to Washington, D.C. for a day long session of advocacy training followed by visits to our congressmen and senators on Capital Hill in March. Together the interests of general dentists and their patients were communicated to more than 100 legislators and their staff. On March 6th, Dr. Cheryl and Kate Limardi helped host an Academy of General Dentistry Lunch & Learn for the dental students at the University of Illinois at Chicago Dental School. Boy Scouts

February is Children's Dental Health Month

During this month our hygienists, Judee & Lisa, are very busy making visits to the day care centers, pre-schools, and elementary schools. This week a Boy Scout troop came to our office to learn about dentistry for a merit badge. Besides helping them to earn their badge, we feel that a better understanding of dental treatment leads to easing the apprehension some patients (especially children) feel when they come to the dentist. Who knows - maybe this will spark an interest in one or more of these fine young boy scouts to pursue a career in the field of dentistry.

Dr. Cheryl (AGD President), Dr. Michael, and Judee attended an Illinois Academy of General Dentistry seminar in December on the topic of "Updates in Pediatric Dentistry." Judee's daughter Katie (second year dental student) also participated in the lunch and learns with the students on the topic of "Ethics in Dentistry." The main focus of their topic was on the prevention of early childhood caries.

As some of you may already know, a new early detection screening for oral cancer called ViziLite is now available. We are recommending this test once a year for anyone over the age of 18. The exam allows us to see beyond what we can see with the naked eye. By the time a cancerous lesion is visible, it can be a stage 3 or 4. The survival rate for oral cancer has not improved compared to the other cancers that have early detection to exams available. The exam itself takes just a few minutes. After rinsing with a solution for one minute, a special light (ViziLite) is used to examine the patient's oral cavity and surrounding tissues.
With the end of the year approaching, it may be a good time to have this exam done while you still have the flex spending available. The procedure itself is $65 and we feel that this is a small price to pay for the peace of mind of a healthy mouth.

The staff of H.D.A. renewed their CPR certificates for healthcare providers in September. CPR (Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation) is the heart/lung revival. CPR is a process whereby a person who has a cardiac event is provided with external muscular support. CPR has contributed to an increase in save rates from sudden cardiac death across the United States. H.D.A. is proud to announce that they have an AED (automated external defibrillator) in their office. The AED is a portable automatic device used to restore normal heart rhythm to patients in cardiac arrest.

This summer H.D.A. invited patients to a complimentary screening of Indiana Jones at Showplace 8 Theater in Vernon Hills, IL.

This patient appreciation event was the first of many to come. It was great to spend time with our patients outside of the office.
